Wednesday 5th March, 2014 - Hall 4.1b, 12:00-1:00 - Master Class - Sustainable Mountain Tourism: Where do we go from here?
Mountain ecosystems are found throughout the world, from the equator to the poles, occupying approximately one-fifth of the world's land surface. Mountains are also homes to people and wildlife. They are also beautiful and exciting places to visit. But contact with the expanding modern world has brought many threats to mountains. Cutting down forests, mining, wars, and global warming are upsetting the balance of nature in mountainous areas. These forces, married with the growing demands by increasingly informed and sophisticated consumers, suggest that sustainable tourism practice is not a luxury item, but a growing necessity for the travel and tourism industry.
At the same time, there is a growing body of knowledge and experiences regarding the implementation and best practices of sustainable tourism in mountainous areas. But how can mountain tourism be developed in a sustainable and responsible manner? What can we learn from the experiences and pitfalls of others?
This presentation draws on the experiences of companies and countries all over the world that are grappling with the issue of sustainable mountain tourism - those that have done it right such as Costa Rica and the Commonwealth of the Dominica and the challenges that they continue to face; those that were forced by their circumstances to develop tourism in a responsible manner, such as many destinations in the Alps. This session, Sustainable Mountain Tourism - Where do we go from here? will be an eye-opener for all those interested in growing mountain tourism businesses or destinations in a sustainable and responsible manner. The key lessons are drawn from Tourism Intelligence International's publication, Sustainable Tourism Development - Lessons from the Leaders.
