Generating economic growth - sustainability The adoption of policies for sustainable tourism development is important for all tourism destinations. It is widely recognised that tourism development brings benefits, but also has the potential to destroy the delicate ecological and cultural balance of host communities. Tourism policies are necessary to lay the foundation for sustainable future growth.
Tourism Intelligence International was retained by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to develop a Sustainable Tourism Policy for the Kingdom of Lesotho in 1999.
Tourism Intelligence International believes that true sustainable tourism development must involve the people and local communities in which sustainable tourism attractions are being developed - from the chief and the clergy, to school children in rural villages, tourism needs to involve the big and the small players, the old and the young, the traditional and the modern. In the Kingdom of Lesotho, we brought together all stakeholders in the industry to work with us to develop the policy that would guide the development of their tourism industry for generations to come. Not only did Tourism Intelligence International succeed in facilitating the development of a policy that the people of Lesotho wanted, but also more than 90% of workshop participants claimed that the workshop achieved its objectives.
