Regional Cooperation in Tourism

Expanding economic opportunities by working together

In the tourism sector, there are many synergies and economies to be had from working together - from educating and training to marketing and promotion, working together increasingly makes sense.

CASE STUDY

SADC Co-operation in Tourism Development

Tourism Intelligence International was retained by the SADC Secretariat to develop the protocol for cooperation in tourism among Southern African States - Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

A situation analysis of the region was prepared, the competitive position of the region was identified, a market analysis was carried out and the costs and benefits of cooperation were identified. The experience of the Caribbean was drawn upon.

All countries within the Southern African Region were visited. Workshops were held in Zimbabwe and Namibia and the Protocol was developed and adopted by SADC Heads of State in June 1998.
