Regional Cooperation in Tourism

Building economic growth through cooperation

The Caribbean is one of the most tourism dependent regions in the world. Although accounting for a mere 3% of international tourist arrivals, the tourism sector in the Caribbean is a significant contributor to the incomes, employment, foreign exchange and growth of the region. Sustainable development is the cornerstone of the Caribbean's tourism development thrust. Working together to achieve sustainability is an important priority of the Caribbean.

CASE STUDY

Tourism Programme Development - Caribbean Region

Tourism Intelligence International was retained by the European Commission to develop the Regional Caribbean Tourism Development Programme that will be funded to support the sustainable development of the tourism sector in the Caribbean region. Tourism Intelligence International facilitated a Log Frame workshop in Jamaica, with representatives drawn from the Caribbean region to design the 8th European Development Fund Regional Tourism Programme.

The programme will focus on capacity building of institutions and people and will develop and strengthen the framework for sustainable development in the Caribbean region. This programme represents the first public/private sector regional tourism programme that will be funded in the tourism sector in the Caribbean. The programme has the two leading regional tourism agencies - the Caribbean Tourism Organisation and the Caribbean Hotel Association as its implementers.
